Daily Healthy Habits for Injury Prevention

All of us want to prevent injuries if possible, and this is even more true in an ageing population. As we get older most of us have bones that are less dense and coordination and balance that are not as good as when we were young, making injuries more likely. Also, older people do not heal as fast as young people, so injuries can have long-range effects.

In today’s blog, we would like to offer a few tips on healthy habits for preventing injuries.

Vitamin D

Make sure you are getting enough vitamin D and getting it every day. This is especially important at higher latitudes where we do not get as much sun as near the equator. Vitamin D is important in a number of body processes and specifically for how bone maintains density. Ask you family doctor how much vitamin D you should be taking every day.

Joint Supports

If you need joint supports, wear them religiously. All the time. Something as simple as hiking boots that come up over your ankle can prevent chronic ankle injuries, but supports only help if you wear them all the time.

Stretching

Do some stretches every day, for example, in the morning. Stretching warms up your muscles and can prevent injuries to muscles, ligaments, and tendons. If you feel stiff, then do them more than once a day. And always do them before going for a walk or run or playing any sport.

Chronic Pain

Pay attention to chronic pain, and if needed talk to your doctor or physiotherapist about it. Those suffering from chronic pain sometimes compensate by over-using other body parts. Addressing the root cause of pain first can prevent injury in other areas.
